Orion Summer Issue Launch with American Rivers

June 26 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT

Join Orion Magazine and American Rivers to celebrate the launch of Orion‘s summer issue, “Swimming Lessons: Staying Afloat in Our Flooded Future.”

“All water has a perfect memory,” Toni Morrison once wrote, “and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” So often the way we write about floods characterizes the water as encroaching upon the infrastructure of our civilizations, when the truth is far simpler: it’s a body reminding us that it once was free to move, unencumbered by the arbitrary borders established by our species. This issue of Orion, generously sponsored by American Rivers, examines the history and present-day experience of floods, not to protect ourselves against them, but to relearn how we might coexist with them.

This event will feature contributors to the issue in conversation with an American Rivers expert, including:

Lacy M. Johnson, a Houston-based professor, curator, activist, and author of The Reckonings and The Other Side—both National Book Critics Circle Award finalists—and Trespasses. She is editor, with the designer Cheryl Beckett, of More City Than Water: A Houston Flood Atlas. She teaches creative nonfiction at Rice University and is the Founding Director of the Houston Flood Museum.

Rosanna Xia is an environmental reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where she specializes in stories about the coast and ocean. She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2020 for explanatory reporting, and her work has been anthologized in the Best American Science and Nature Writing series. Her award-winning book, California Against the Sea, has been praised as a poetic and revelatory exploration of how we relate to the natural world.

Kristan Culbert, an Associate Director of Conservation at American Rivers, where she helps lead the organization’s efforts to restore urban creeks and floodplains in California’s Bay Area and Central Valley. With expertise at the nexus of environmental justice and science-based environmental conservation, Kristan works closely with community leaders, governmental agencies, and nonprofits to advance equity in river conservation.

A free 1-year membership to American Rivers is included in event registration. By registering you agree to American Rivers’ privacy policy & to receive American Rivers mailings.
